Getting to Koh Chang
Koh Chang is an island and it doesn't have an airport so there is only one way there and that
is by boat.
There are four main ferry terminals on the island (around nine in total) and four servicing the island from the
mainland (see map).
However three of the island ferry terminals are on the East coast but as the West coast is far more popular
(East has no sand beaches) the vast majority travel to the ferry terminal at the northern point of the island.
If you arrive at one of the East Coast terminals you have a much longer drive around to your hotel on the West
side.
Wherever possible get the Car Ferry from Thaachat Bay which is about 15km North-west of the more popular Laem
Ngop terminals which are closer to Trat. This is because the trip is shorter and also drops you at the Northern
most terminal on the island meaning you have a far easier journey if your hotel is on the West coast on Koh
Chang.
Note : Driving in Koh Chang
If you are taking a car or motor bike we strongly advise that you arrive on the island well before sunset. The
island is mountainous and the roads are treacherous to say the least. You do NOT want to be driving for the first
time on Koh Chang in the dark!
Getting to the Mainland Ferry Terminals
By Air
Bangkok Airways flies three times a day from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to Trat. The flights depart at
09:00, 12:15, and 16:35, and takes 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Direct door-to-door minibus transfers from Trat airport to Ko Chang resorts costs around 500 baht/person one way
and 800 baht/person return including the ferry crossing.
By Car
The drive from Bangkok takes about five hours. Note that most taxis will decline this trip as their chances of a
return pick-up are very small. The more expensive Limousines however will usually make the trip but at a price. You
can expect to pay upwards of 5000 baht for a one way trip in a limousine.
By Bus
From Bangkok the easiest way to get to Laem Ngop is to take a first class bus from the Eastern (Ekamai) Bus
Terminal direct to the Centrepoint pier. The fare is 268 baht and takes just over five hours. Departures from
Ekamai are at 07:45 and 09:45 and return at 14:00 and 16:00. This bus also stops at Chanthaburi.
Alternatively, there are 1st class (approximately. 5 hours) and 2nd class services from both the Eastern Bus
Terminal (Ekamai) and Northern Bus Terminal (Moh Chit) direct to Trat, and frequent songthaew (baht bus) services
from Trat to Laem Ngop piers. Add 40 minutes to get from Trat to the ferry piers.
There are direct minibus services to Laem Ngop from Pattaya and from Bangkok's Khao San Road.
